Still Using Our Brains

CONNECT Brand

In the waybacks, as wireless devices were being born, someone in the warehouse would take inventory count and then bring the information back and enter it into the system. The founder of CONNECT developed a handheld wand and the code to connect inventory entries on the wand to software on the computers in the other room. Big-time stuff.

Working as a freelancer at The Bridge Group, I designed the Connect logo, and all collateral materials including stationary, a sales presentation folder, technical sell sheet pages, the technical guide binder, and the guide pages and dividers.

To create the logo, I had the characters typeset, and I cut them apart and altered them individually over several rounds to create the finished logo artwork.

It sure ain’t the same process these days, but it certainly was satisfying at the time.

The logo and stationery package earned recognition and was included in the American Center for Design*’s Fifteenth Annual 100 Show (1993). “The logotype is very smart and the way it’s applied on the stationery is interesting. Even though the company deals with computers and connections, the designers avoided making a look that’s overly high tech. That appeals to me.” Alexander Isley

*The Society for Typographic Arts became The American Center for Design for a brief period (1989–2002) before reverting back to the STA.
